Internship case study · FreshLens at TalkMeUp

Turning release criteria into checks that run.

FreshLens is a computer-vision product that scores produce freshness, built by a team at TalkMeUp during my internship. I started on detection and finished owning release verification: turning the team's release criteria into deterministic, reproducible checks with evidence a reviewer can inspect and hand off.

Context and my scope over time

FreshLens is a team product; this page covers only the parts I owned. Early in the internship I worked on YOLOv8 produce detection. On one demo sample, post-processing reduced 9 raw boxes to 4 correct labels with no false positives. That is a single-sample result, not a dataset-level metric, and it is not the main story here.

In the final weeks I was the named owner of the release-verification track: the gate orchestrator, the result contract, the evidence it produces, and the review of that evidence.

The problem

Release readiness lived in prose. Different workflows produced evidence in different shapes, runs were hard to reproduce, and whoever picked up the work next had to reconstruct what "ready" meant. Unclear states tended to get rounded up to "pass".

Decisions

How it was verified

Each gate emits its command, exit code, and artifacts, so a reviewer can re-run it and compare. The orchestrator and the contract went through review before merging, and the remaining materials are in a freeze review at the time of writing.

Status and boundaries

Orchestrator and contract merged Some materials in freeze review Native shopper pipeline not shipped

The merged work is the verification tooling and its contract. The native shopper pipeline had not shipped when the internship closed, and nothing on this page should be read as the whole product being in production.

Where to see the evidence

The team's working materials are internal, so this page presents my scope in summary rather than reproducing them. A sanitized walkthrough of the orchestrator, the contract, and one gate result is available on request.
